ITANAGAR, Mar 8: The Gender Council of Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) has sought the cooperation of the Capital Police in providing prompt response and updates on women and children (POCSO) cases to the press in order to highlight such cases rightfully to the public.
In a representation submitted to the Capital superintendent of police (SP) Jimmy Chiram on the occasion of the International Women’s Day celebration at Itanagar Police Station, the Gender Council convenor Nellie Manpoong and APUWJ vice-president Karpu Chisi have reasoned the steps taken to help contribute in fast-tracking the cases relating to the issues of rape, molestation and other forms of crimes against women.
Meanwhile, the council has assured that utmost care will be taken while reporting such sensitive cases by the press fraternity.
Speaking during the program, APUWJ president Amar Sangno recalled the famous Tongam Rina shooting case which is still pending in court. He also expressed concern regarding the online trolling of female journalists for their reportages and has asked for support from the SP and his team to curb online bullying along with other forms of abuse.
Circle officer, Laxmi Dodum in her deliberation suggested womenfolk embrace the brighter side of being a woman. She fondly recalled the fond memories with her elder sister who has always been a supporting pillar for her. She also told the members present to reach out to the women helpline etc for any assistance regarding crime against women.
Meanwhile, Karpu Chisi emphasized on having counseling sessions for those children who face domestic abuse at home from their own family members. She also suggested for a self-defence workshop occasionally by the police department for the children, especially females to make them able to protect themselves.
Accepting the representation, SP Chiram has assured all possible cooperation from the police’s side. He has requested the media team to contact directly for any kind of assistance relating to news or disparity in FIR filing in near future.
Earlier, during the celebration, a powerpoint presentation was given by the SP wherein it was shown that a total of 1140 cases have been registered at the Women Police Station, Itanagar since its inception. According to the data in the PPT, about 37 cases have been registered, 15 persons have been arrested, 6 charged and a total of 5 people have been convicted in the year 2022.
The media team consisted of Amar Sangno from Arunachal Times, Karpu Chisi from Independent Review, Sangge Droma from Arunachal Today, Rakhe Agam Dui from Arunachal Express and Phil Yania from Arunachal Mirror.
The female students from VKV School, Itanagar and Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar were specially invited by the Capital Police for the celebration purpose.
Among others, Itanagar SDPO Kamdam Sikom, Naharlagun SDPO Dekio Gumja, Anurag Dwiwedi (IPS Probationer), DySP Geri Tai, inspector M Mibang, sub-inspectors Dopi Pakam and Rosy Singpho were also present.
