Aalo, Jul 30: Minister for Tax & Excise, Tourism and Cultural Affairs Jarkar Gamlin met with officials of district administration, police, public and NGOS to curb the growing problems of drug abuse and consequent social problems arising out it.

Addressing the meeting, Gamlin disclosed that drug and alcoholism among the young generation is quite detrimental for a peaceful society and all should unite against such vices. Drugs are being used on availability through peddlers and these peddlers need to be booked under various Acts for giving them exemplary punishment, he said.

“Most of the officers are locals from the district and they need to play a proactive role to contain the growing menace of drug abuse among the young generation through awareness campaigns. Reckless driving by young boys after 9 pm unless in an emergency should be strictly regulated by the police. Schemes for alternative avenues and recreational centres can be funded but land scarcity is a problem for us,” the minister said.

Presiding over the function, West Siang Deputy Commissioner Swetika Sachan disclosed that strong strategic plans are being drawn to check the flow and use of narcotic substances. The Superintendent of Police Jummar Basar disclosed that a few addicts are languishing in jails and they are contemplating to go for counselling with the help of recovered addicts.

Chairperson, Aalo Town Peoples’ Welfare & Development Society, Kento Ete stressed on supporting the Mothers’ Vision to wage a war on the drug menace.  Chairperson, Mothers’ Vision Jumde Yomgam Gamlin said lack of opportunities is the main reason spoiling the youngsters who take to drugs and alcoholism. She called for creating job avenues to engage the young people and stressed on strictly imposing a ban on sale of ghutkas in Ghumtis in all sensitive locations.

Later, the minister announced Rs. 3 lakhs for Mothers’ Vision and Rs. 2 lakhs to the police for carrying out effective awareness campaigns.
