ITANAGAR, Dec 29: The Banderdewa Forest Division is stepping up search operations in all entry points to the capital complex to check smuggling of wildlife meat which sees a spike during the festive season. Reportedly every year, during the festive season especially New Year’s Eve smuggling of wildlife meat into the Capital Complex increases.

The forest department has urged the public to report  such illegal activities to the nearest forest, police, administration establishments and cooperate with enforcement departments during checking operations.

The learned citizens are also requested to join hands with the department in sensitizing the transport sector, especially private sumo drivers not to accept and transport items from unknown persons. The transporters, sumo drivers shall be held responsible, guilty and persecuted if caught with any such unclaimed wildlife meat, animals and articles during search operations, said   DFO Banderdewa Forest Division, Neelam Nedo in a press statement. 

Under Wildlife Protection Act 1972,  hunting, killing, possession, dealings of meat, trophies, carcasses, articles of wildlife including animals, birds, reptiles, insects, plants etc are punishable offences with quantum of punishments up to 7 years imprisonment term and hefty fine.
