Itanagar, Apr 22: The Centre for Earth Sciences & Himalayan Studies observed Earth Day 2024, sponsored by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, themed on  "Planet vs Plastic" at the Arunachal University of Studies, Namsai campus. The event was held from April 21 to 22, which witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and esteemed guests with a renewed resolution to combat plastic pollution and safeguard the planet's health.
On the inaugural day,  an Essay and Drawing competitions were conducted that saw overwhelming participation from over 100 students from the Arunachal University of Studies. Participants showcased their creativity and commitment to environmental advocacy, laying the foundation for two days impactful engagement. 
The second day commenced with the registration of students and faculty members and distribution of T-shirts and caps. On the occasion, a pledge was administred with a resolution to "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" in daily life of plastic usages.
The day long programme was also marked by a mass plantation drive in the university campus followed by a cleanliness drive in the premises of District Hospital Namsai.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, the Vice Chancellor of Arunachal University of Studies, Namsai, Prof. D.S. Hernwal stressd on minimum usages of plastic articles to improve life quality and protect the environment. Coming generation will suffer, if we don’t avoid usage of plastic products, he said adding that minimum utilization of plastic products would improve life quality of human beings.  
Urging the particpants, Vice Chancellor called upon all to become champions for environmental conservation and pledge to mitigate plastic pollutions in all forms. 
Participating on the occasion, Director, Centre for Earth Science and Himalayan Studies, Tana Tage exhorted to participants to inculcate good actions to fight against the plastic menace in society. He further said such events should be observed in daily life to keep a clean environment. He also disclosed that state government has adopted several mitigation plans to promote sustainable practices for less environmental impact under Pakke Tiger Reserve 2047 Declaration on Climate Change Resilient and Responsive Arunachal Pradesh.
“As a citizen of Arunachal Pradesh, we are blessed to reside in a land of unparalleled natural beauty,”he said, with this privilege comes huge responsibility on each individual to safeguard and preserve environment for future generation. 
Dr. Krishna Chowlu, Scientist D, Botanical Survey of India stressed on action oriented practices to minimize plastic usage, advocating for the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives such as jute bags and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The event concluded with the felicitation and distribution of cash prizes to winners of essay and drawing competition.
