ZIRO, Jun 22:

Arunachal Pradesh will organize Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight this year fromJuly 3-16 next with the ultimate aim of zero child death due to childhood diarrhoea. In this regard, district administrations are gearing up to observe the fortnight in an effective manner.

The District Steering Committee meeting on Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight was held in the office chamber of the Deputy Commissioner, Lower Subansiri today.

Chairing the meeting, the DC called for unified effort from all stakeholders to make the program a success. ‘Awareness pertaining to the dates for the distribution of zinc tablets and ORS has to be percolated to far flung areas as well,’ he added and suggested for initiating IEC activities way ahead of the scheduled dates.

While observing the absence of AIR representatives, he directed all the departments implementing national flagship programs to involve AIR in disseminating information to far flung areas in local dialects. ‘Awareness for such programs should be a continuous process and schools can be made a center   of awareness activities,’ he further added and directed DDSE, to circulate IEC materials, such as handouts to the students.

The DC also underscored the importance of ASHAs and Anganwadis workers in such programs.

ZPC Hage Kobin suggested for actively involving PRI members for creating awareness and circulating the information for such programs well in ahead of the schedule dates.

Earlier, DRCHO Dr. Derin Likar presented a detail PowerPoint on the IDCF activities to be undertaken during the fortnight. He informed that 6517 children under 0-5 years of age will be provided with Zinc tablets and ORS packets.

At PASIGHAT,

District level Coordination Committee Meeting cum Orientation Workshop for Medical Officers on Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF) was held at the DC’s conference hall today under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner Tamiyo Tatak. Among others, DMO Dr. Mandip Perme, MS Dr. YR Darang, ZPC Kaling Dai, Dy. CC (PMC) Kaling Darang and medical officers of PHCs and CHCs attended the meeting.

Addressing the house, DC Tatak urged the committee members to disseminate proper information among the masses and to put the best effort to control diarrhoea and other communicable diseases.

While informing that IDCF would be observed fromJuly 3 next onwards, he asked the MO In-charge of PHCs and CHCs to impart proper training to the ANMs and ASHAs in their respective jurisdictions so that they could provide ORS packets to each under-five-year-old child by visiting every household.

DMO Dr. M Perme apprised that the district is fully prepared to make the program successful. Diarrhoea cases are common during the summer season. Poor sanitation and unhygienic conditions become risk factors.  According to him, oral rehydration therapy (ORT) with ORS remains the cornerstone of appropriate case management of diarrhoeal dehydration and is considered the single-most effective strategy to prevent diarrhoea deaths in children.

DRCH Dr. T Gao presented a detailed report on achievements and preparation through power point presentation.
