ITANAGAR, Jul 20: The All West Kameng District Students' Union (AWKDSU) on Friday urged the state government to constitute a committee for verification of number of Tibetan refugees settled in West Kameng district while claiming that many are allegedly availing benefits of both Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates and Refugee cards illegally.
In a press conference held here today, General Secretary of the Union, David Jebisow raised suspicion that out of 123 Tibetan refugees settled in West Kameng district, 14 are suspected to be having both Refugee Cards and ST certificates.
Clarifying that the union is not against the settlement of Tibetan refugees in the district so long as they are availing government benefits as refugees, Jebisow affirmed that the students union would not let them enjoy benefits of both ST certificates and refugee cards.
Stating that the union will not allow indigenous people’s rights being snatched away by refugees, Jebisow demanded immediate cancellation of ST certificates and land allotments given to them and verify those doubtful refugees by constituting a fact finding committee.
