BORDUMSA, Nov 25: Following alleged custodial death of an Assamese youth early this morning in Diyun police custody in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, tension gripped Bordumsa on the Assam side. Several student bodies of Assam from Gorkha, Sonowal Kachari, Adivasi and Deori community besides All Assam Students Union (AASU) staged protest by burning tyres in front of Arunachal police check post in Bordumsa. Terming it ‘ruthless and barbaric’ the student bodies demanded a high level judicial probe into the custodial death.
Meanwhile Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma visited the site and announced an ex-gratia of fifty thousand rupees to the victim’s family.
News flashed early this morning that the deceased, Diganta Saikia committed suicide in custody. A resident of Kujupather village of Bordumsa in Tinsukia district, Saikia was involved in a series of motor cycle theft cases in Diyun and adjoining areas. He actually surrendered before the Assam Police at Bordumsa before he was handed over to Arunachal Police and simultaneously shifted to Diyun.
Adequate forces from Arunachal Pradesh were deployed to avert any untoward incident. Meanwhile, the police and civil administration of both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh held talks to bring the situation under control.
