ITANAGAR, Aug 13:The 5th edition of Dorjee Khandu Memorial State Open Badminton Championship-2017 came to a successful end at the MLA Cottage Badminton Stadium here on Sunday.

Attending the valedictory function as chief guest BJP state president, Tapir Gao, while congratulating the winners and participants opined that badminton has of late become one of the most popular sports in the North East especially in Arunachal.

Considering the popularity of the sport, Gao appealed to the state government to initiate steps to construct badminton courts in all the constituencies so that even the ones living in far flung areas get the opportunity to learn the sport and make a career out of it.

‘The legislators of the state should construct at least one badminton court in their respective constituencies from their MLALAD fund,’ the president said.   

Chief Minister Pema Khandu who was also present on the occasion in his short deliberation exhorted the youths to be disciplined in life and keep on playing games and sports to stay fit.

Among others present on the occasion were, parliamentary secretary for sports and youth affairs Nyamar Karbak, Arunachal State Badminton Association (ASBA) vice president, Tame Phassang, Sports Authority of Arunachal, chairman, Bamang Tago including his deputy Gechi Doke.

More than 260 players from 18 districts of Arunachal Pradesh participated in the coveted championship which was organized by Arunachal State Badminton Association (ASBA) in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.
