GUWAHATI, Aug 14 : Despite escalating tension between India and China in Doklam, soldiers from neighbouring China will attend the Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) on India’s Independence Day in Bumla in Arunachal Pradesh. Ever since the SinoIndia 1962 war, Bumla is one of the locations for holding Border Personnel Meeting between the troops of both countries for meeting and resolving local issues.

It has become tradition since 1962 that two sides participate in each other’s important day. Chinese troops attend India’s Independence Day on August 15, Republic day on January 26 and festival like Baisakhi while Indian troops attend China’s National Day on October 1 at Bum La. Bumla was one of the theaters of the 1962 war. Generally, during the celebration after cultural programmes besides social interactions are held.

A defence spokesperson on the condition of anonymity told ET, “Despite escalating tension between the two countries the meeting will we held and Chinese troops will attend the same.” India has beefed up presence of troops from Sikkim to Arunachal following the standoff over Doklam. China often claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of its territory. After 14th Dalai Lama visited Arunachal Pradesh in April this year, China hit back and ‘standardised’ official names for six places in the state.
