NEW DELHI, Aug 4:  The Central Government is all for taking adequate steps against erring private hospitals vis-a-vis non maintenance of minimum standards of treatment and for different categories of clinical establishments, the Lok Sabha was told today.

Stating this during Question Hour, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda said while the Centre has a law under the name and style of The Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, it is mainly up to the State Governments to adopt the law and implement it.

While the provisions of the law are applicable in all union territories and four states (Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Sikkim), other were to adopt the law by passing a resolution in the State Legislatures.

Mr Nadda was responding to supplementary question from Congress member MI Shanavas, who said in many places private hospitals were only known for minting money and not providing effective health care to the patients.  Responding to the supplementaries, Minister said the Centre would consider the request of the Tripura Government to set up a Regional Cancer Centre.

To a supplementary query from Sankar Prasad Datta (CPI-M), Minister said the Central Government does not differentiate between states, especially in Northeast in terms of sanctioning money for maintenance and taking care of patients in the Government-run hospitals.

Mr Datta was complaining though Tripura is the second largest populated state in Northeast, other states in the region like Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya have often got more funds than Tripura. The CPI-M Member also wanted to know why there has been no response from the Centre for setting up of Regional Nursing Centre in Tripura.

Mr Nadda, however, assured the Member that he would look into the demand for a regional cancer centre in Tripura.
