ITANAGAR, Aug 5:

Keeping her resolve to create awareness among the masses on cancer, founder of AMG Foundation and AMG Accessories, Amung Tadu Lollen launched a two day cancer awareness programme on Saturday, with interactive programmes in three schools in the Capital.

Since cancer is a vast subject, visiting doctor Dr Caleb Harris focused on linkages between tobacco consumption and cancer, as tobacco is one of the leading causes of the disease, with two-third of India’s population said to be victims of cancer because of tobacco usage.

“Nicotine does not cause cancer, but it is an addictive substance found in tobacco, which leads to addiction and subsequent diseases, like cancer,” he said.

Dr Harris also informed that the northeast region has the highest rate of cancer in the country, with Arunachal men and Mizoram women at the top of the list of cancer patients.

Although cancer can also be non-tobacco related as in the case of Amung, Dr Harris said, “We have a choice; to stay sick or to stay healthy”, and suggested students to consider their choices before falling prey to unhealthy practices.

Supporting AMG Foundation in its endeavour, Lecturer, Lily R Jomoh also said that she dedicated the programme to her brother, Geli Riba, who passed away from Nasophrygl Carcinoma  recently. She pointed out how cancer not only affects the patient, but their loved ones as well.

Amung, who is a cancer survivor herself, spoke of her journey throughout the sickness and the recovery period, and the people she met along, who inspired her to take up the cause of spreading awareness on the dreaded disease.

Visiting Donyi Polo Vidya Bhawan, the Itanagar VKV and Kendriya Vidyalaya-II, she informed the gathering of young minds that this was her first awareness programme, and hoped that they would take home whatever they have learnt and teach others along the way.

“The response of the children was incredible. They genuinely wanted to know more about it and engaged in discussions with Dr Harris. I also have to thank Dr Harris for coming all the way to Arunachal for the cause and making the experience for the children fun and educational at the same time.”

In continuation to the programme, AMG Foundation, along with the Royal Arunachal Riders will also hold a cancer awareness ride on the afternoon of August 6 from Akashdeep in Itanagar.
