ZIRO, Jun 15: “Weaving for us is not just a source of income, but it is that symbolic activity which intertwines our culture and traditions in a piece of fabric and passes it down to generations,” underscored Onit Panyang while addressing weavers of Lower and Upper Subansiri districts during a seminar conducted by Arunachal Pradesh Weavers Federation Ltd (AWFED) at DC conference hall, Ziro today.

Panyang also advised weavers to design exclusive products using natural fabrics and stressed on reviving and drawing out policies and guidelines for encouraging cotton cultivation in the state.

Rinchin Tashi, RCS, while expressing joy on the revival of cooperative movement in Lower Subansiri district in particular, said that cooperative movement was an effort to create self-sustainable economic activities, which is a necessity now, with unemployment on the rise.

He suggested that encouraging weaving may address the unemployment problems in the state in the long run and suggested for more interactions between the bankers, beneficiaries and the cooperative officials to resolve issues pertaining to loans and repayments.

Director Textiles and Handicrafts, Haj Dodung, called for patenting the local designs to provide exclusivity to the designs and suggested for setting up of business service providers to intensify localized productions.

Director, Desmania, Sandhya Raman presented a Powerpoint on marketing model for handlooms, wherein marketing methodologies and strategies were discussed in length. Charles Lalthlen Mawai, Proprietor, Heritage Mizoram shared his success story with weavers; how he started his business in 2008 and sells its products to luxury hotels all over India and also exports to Japan as well.

Earlier Onit Panyang, Secretary, Cooperation also inaugurated the AWFED display- cum -sale mela at the AWFED building. The mela will be held from June 15-17 next. Later a closed door interactive session was held for all the weavers and the resource persons.

OP Mounglang, AGM, NABARD and Gyati Mali, Jt. Director Textiles, RD Thungon, GM, ICDP also spoke on the occasion.
