ITANAGAR, Jun 20:Reiterating immediate fulfillment of its long pending demands, the All Arunachal Pradesh Border Students Union (AAPBSU) served a 20 day ultimatum to the state government to press for its demands.

The union has been demanding appointment of independent Director, Department of Inter-State Border Affairs with permanent infrastructure, appointment of a local advocate (APST) to assist in the Supreme Court to deal with Arunachal-Assam boundary dispute and creation of 977 posts of 3rd batch of APPBn approved by the State Cabinet in 2010.

In this connection, the union will be conducting a peaceful rally on July 14 next, from Akashdeep to Tennis court, IG Park to mount pressure on the government as a part of its democratic movement.

Addressing a press conference this afternoon, President, Sunny Tara said that various memorandums including representations have been submitted but successive governments failed to address their demands.

Justifying its demand for independent Director for border affairs department, he informed that except Arunachal all Northeast states have their own border affairs policies being supervised by independent director backed by a Minister.

Underlining the urgent need for a full-fledged border affairs department, Tara informed that presently border affairs related issues were being administered by state Home Department and looked after by joint secretary as its additional charge.

‘Home department is already overburdened and there is need of an independent Director who has a better understanding of the role and the kind of challenges faced by people living in interstate boundaries,’ he asserted.

Also claiming  that administrative reform (A/R) has been cleared by the cabinet during late Dorjee Khandu’s reign vide an order –HNM (A) 78/2010/1279 in 2012, the union stated that  it is yet to get approval from the Finance department for reasons unknown.

Citing that the present armed police force is not enough to manage the increasing law and order problems especially in border areas, he claimed that after creation of first and second batch APPBn in the year 1988 and 1989 no more posts have not been created nor has the government initiated further steps to raise its strength.

‘Personnel appointed during first and second batch of AAPBN recruitment are mostly posted at districts while ignoring disputed border areas where they are needed most or were recruited for,’ he added.
