ITANAGAR, Aug 2:A voluntary blood donation camp was conducted by Raj Bhavan, Itanagar along with Arunachal Voluntary Blood Donor Organization, a unit of Arunachal Vivekananda Yuva Shakti, State Blood Transfusion Council, under Directorate of Health Services and Ramakrishna Mission Hospital in the Darbar Hall, Raj Bhavan today.

Gracing the occasion, State’s First Lady, Kavita Acharya said that blood donation is gift of life to a needy individual. ‘To a donor, it is only a ten minute exercise but for a recipient, it is life. Giving the gift that cost nothing to the donor but for the recipient it means everything,’ she said adding that blood donation creates emotional bonds amongst the people.

State’s First Lady appealed to the people to come forward and donate, when and where it is required. She said that the State, at this progressive phase, lacks basic facilities for blood bank and have communication bottleneck to shift patients.

The patients depend on the donors. Let’s pledge, not to allow even a single soul to lose his or her life due to want of blood donor. Let us take a solemn pledge to donate blood at least once a year, she exhorted.

Smt Acharya conveyed her deep appreciation to Ramesh Jeke and his organisation, the Arunachal Voluntary Blood Donor Organization, a unit of Arunachal Vivekananda Yuva Shakti. She also felicitated the State Blood Transfusion Council and Directorate of Health Services, Arunachal Pradesh AIDS Control Society, and Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Itanagar for organising the benevolent event.

Highlighting on the importance of blood donation, Ramesh Jeke, said that human blood has no substitute and requirement of safe blood is increasing and regular voluntary blood donations is vital for blood transfusion services.

Throughout the year, there is always some need for blood in one way or the other, especially during accidents and medical emergencies. You don’t have to be superheroes to save life. You can do it be donating your blood which will be replaced within few days, he added.

Sharing a sad episode which he went through about ten years earlier, Jeke said that while he was donating blood in the hospital, he saw a lady crying for blood donor as her five year old daughter required it for operation. He immediately went around requesting people for blood donation but no one turned up.

As a result, the child died. This incidence stirred him deeply and thereafter he decided to work for blood donation.

 He was selected for National Defence Academy but left and started blood donation movement on 26th November 2008. Since then he has donated 42 times.

Jeke exhorted people to regularly donate blood. Change your mind set with positive approach, he stressed. He also advised on dos and don’ts for blood donation.

Earlier, Dony Taying, Assistant Director, Arunachal Pradesh AIDS Control Society also spoke on the occasion.

Later, the Governor PB Acharya also interacted with the donors. He appreciated the donors and organisers of the camp.

51 units of blood were collected on the occasion. 28 donors, including 11 ITBP personnel attached to Raj Bhavan led by Assistant Commandant Ravinder Dahiya and Inspector Amar Pal, Nineteen from 138 Battalion of CRPF, Senki View, Itanagar led by Anil Kumar, Second in Command and four students—Ms Menuka Kadu, Ms Dogin Yami, Ms Embi Mega and Ms Nending from Rajiv Gandhi University donated on the occasion. Large number of officials and staffers of Raj Bhavan volunteered but on the advice of the doctors, many were turned back.
