BHALUKPONG, Feb 25: Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of Arunachal Pradesh in association with Marut Dronetech Pvt. Ltd. has introduced a pilot project on plantation using Drone Technology.
The launch took place at Doimara Reserve Forest area in Khellong Forest Division, Bhalukpong under the guidance of PCCF & Principal Secretary (EF&CC) R. K. Singh and V. K. Jawal, DFO Bhalukpong. During the first experimental phase of the project, 200 hectares of degraded land under Doimara Reserve Forest will be planted using seed balls dropped from a drone called “Seedcopter”, the department said in a release.
The project of a Drone-based plantation is a part of the introduction of Drone Technology in the State under the forestry sector. The pilot project will continue for nearly 15 days during which 2,00,000 seed balls will be planted over 200 hectare area.
The drone-based plantation is a new and innovative way of planting seeds in difficult terrain where reach is limited and slope gradient is high. The technology includes creating seed balls from a mixture of clay and manure having seed at the core of it.
The seed ball provides the necessary moisture and nutrients required for the germination of seeds. These seed balls dropped from drones at specific intervals reach the ground and germinate gradually after few days.
The seed balls are specially transported from Hyderabad for this project, however, in subsequent phases, it is planned to prepare them with the help of local communities & Self-help groups which will also generate employment in local villages, the department said.
