ITANAGAR, Apr 8: Group of like-minded youths comprising artists and environmentalists organized a peaceful demonstration to protest against the construction of dams in Arunachal Pradesh here at the Wall of Harmony, Civil Secretariat.
During the demonstration, youths also distributed pamphlets to create awareness of the impacts of dam on nature and to the human race.
Speaking to the media, Bhanu Tatak, an artist said "Our motive is not to create any hostility but to show our protest and to create awareness amongst the people on how dams are going to impact the environment as well as to the human existence."
She also disclosed that different groups of artists, and environmentalists from Arunachal and Assam including other parts of the country have joined the movement to show their protest against dams in Arunachal. "The graffito by artist Neelim Mahanta and activist Ebo Mili on the Wall of Harmony is not to dishonor the art of another artist, but an effort to send a message against dams in Arunachal. They had only painted on a portion of the dam, whereas 90% portion of the wall is the same as it was," she added.
The group is demanding from the government is to study the health impacts on the communities posed by the construction of dams and diversion of rivers. Natural hazard risk assessment posed by dams, a discussion on the socio-cultural disintegration due to dams and their displacement, cumulative environment impact assessment of dam building across Arunachal specially in Dibang valley including impacts on the downstream communities of Assam and others.
