ITANAGAR, Apr 20:

Defying the district administration’s order, the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) held a massive demonstration outside the main head office State Bank of India (SBI), Itanagar on Friday to protest against non availability of cash in ATMs.

Blaming the government and the RBI for the development, APPC Chief, Takam Sanjoy in a separate press briefing over the issue accused the BJP led government at the Centre for torturing the general public for no fault of theirs.

Sanjoy pointed out that as all ATMs in the state remain dry, especially poor people who transact daily are facing hardship in getting cash thereby forcing them to move from pillar to post to meet their financial needs.

Stating that citizens of country have lost faith in the current ruling government, he however maintained that the objective behind the party’s move is not intended to disturb the functioning of the banks, but to seek the right of the people.

Terming the day as undeclared financial & economic emergency in the country, the APCC criticized the state BJP government led by Pema Khandu including the Centre for failing to fulfill people’s aspirations and promises they made.

Quoting Union Minister’s clarification that banks have sufficient currency,  Sanjoy questioned if so then why people are facing the crisis in banks and ATMs. “Mere lip service will not help as people want immediate action to improve the supply of currency notes,” he said.

Earlier, an APCC delegation also submitted request letter to the Regional Director-RBI, Guwahati, and seeking immediate intervention to ensure cash flow in ATMs within seven days.

In the letter, it requested for immediate and appropriate measures in normalizing the situation while also threatening to launch its 2nd phase of dharna by gheraoing and demonstrating outside RBI Guwahati and Civil Secretariat at Itanagar if situation remains the same. However, he did not specify any timeline.
