KHONSA, Aug 28:Minister for Agriculture, T&C, and Fisheries Wangki Lowang has called for subsistence farming to be replaced by cash and commercial crops. He also opined that the prevailing traditional practice of jhum cultivation should be replaced by terrace cultivation.

 The Minister was speaking at an awareness programme on New India Manthan “Sankalp Se Siddhi” at Deomali organized by by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tirap District.

He also called for adopting integrated and mechanized farming for round the year multiple crop cultivation, so that the land is not kept fallow and gain better harvest round the year.

However, Lowang pointed  that while going for permanent farming, farmers need to be educated and trained about use of organic fertilizers, pesticides etc for bumper harvest.

Later Lowang administered the pledge of “sankalp se siddhi” and deliberated on the genesis of the concept which has been launched to commemorate the 75th year of “quit India movement of 1942”.

Tirap, Deputy Commissioner, PN Thungon emphasized on adopting organic fertilizer like Cow dung etc, instead of using modern chemicals to check health hazards and urged the KVK team to ensure that the outreach programme is implemented in letter and spirit.

Expressing his commitment to make Tirap an open defecation free (ODF) district, the DC sought cooperation from all sections of people to bring changes in health and education sectors.

DC informed that every school and health functionaries will be monitored along with their attendance and cautioned that those erring will be dealt with as per CCS (Conduct rules) and no one will be spared.

 DFO Navneet Srivastava urged the farming community to adopt multi-crop cultivation replacing existing single crop rice cultivation which is not all resourceful for farmers of this region.

Various other topics related to agriculture were also deliberated by resource persons.
