ITANAGAR, Mar 15: In the wake of the acceptance of Special Leave  Petition (SLP)  filed by All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) against the judgment and order dated 19th March 2013 passed by the Division Bench of Gauhati High Court in PIL No. 52 of 2010 ordering the Election Commission of India for inclusion of the names of Chakma and Hajong refugees in the electoral roll of the State of Arunachal Pradesh, the legal advisors of AAPSU today who followed the case since day one  has welcomed the decision.

Speaking to media persons at press club today, Legal Advisor, AAPSU, Advocate Marto Kato informed that after almost 22 hearings since 16th December 2015 and at least 27 long months the Supreme Court has admitted our SLP which is great news for all the indigenous people. ‘AAPSU has been fighting for the issue since many decades and now we have a break to clear all the aspect of illegal refugees in the state during the proceeding of SLP,’ added Kato.

He further informed that, AAPSU had filed Special Leave Petition on 6th Nov’ 2015 challenging the Guwahati High Court Order for enrollment of Chakma-Hajong in the electoral roll. He also appealed the state government to submit all the required documents to the Court for a strong judgment. 

Kato also added that few Chakmas have also filed a petition in High Court seeking the enrollment of their names in panchayat level, however here also court has made AAPSU as one of the respondent party.

‘Now the whole episode will be revived and we will get more opportunity to make the Court clear about the various laid down norms and rights of indigenous people of the state,’ said another Legal Advisor Nabam Jallow.

Further, welcoming the positive move of Supreme Court, General Secretary Tobom Dai appealed the people to continue extending support to AAPSU and government on this significant issue. Further, he also appealed the state government to take necessary steps and consultation on recently passed Arunachal Pradesh Land Settlement and Records Amendment Bill, 2018.
