PASIGHAT, Aug 8: The Pasighat police have recovered two more stolen bikes from one of habitual offenders arrested recently taking the total recovered bikes to five so far.

While informing about the recovery, I/O of the case, SI A. Apang said that, one of the bike lifter Tobing Dai from Berung village is a habitual offender and has been arrested earlier in connection with a mobile theft case from Bakin Pertin General Hospital, Pasighat. With recovery of three bikes in total stolen by him in three separate occurrences, all from Itanagar, Tobing Dai is further being interrogated to unearth his connection with other theft cases in the region.

SI A. Apang said that, Tobing Dai and another habitual bike lifter, Toni Koyu from whom two bikes were recovered recently are serious offenders who have been released on bail in the earlier case.

On question of why police were not been able to crack on such habitual offenders, Pasighat police sources said that, the offenders are granted bail by Court easily despite the provision of 3 years rigorous imprisonment under law. “We are even restricted by Court not to torture the accused persons due to which police are not  been able to divulge more information regarding connected offences from the arrested lifters,” added a police officer from Pasighat PS.

We are often being slammed by public of being negligent in cracking such repeated crimes in the town, but the fact is that our morale in most of the cases are pulled down by direction of the Court where serious offenders are let off on bail without any reasonable punishments which leads to such repeated occurrences of theft cases though they are still on bail, shared a police officer.

Two other bikes like FZS Blue-Red colour with Chasis No. ME121COG7DE019013, Engine No. 21CG019013 and FZS Blue-White, Chasis No. ME121COH1E2068849, Engine No. 21CHO68885 said to be lifted from Itanagar, near APST Bus Station, Ganga and Bank Tinali in recent months are unclaimed as the owners are unknown.

On being asked by this reporter, accused Tobing Dai said that, he loves bike so he steals it. He also confessed to using drugs and revealed that his experience as a mechanic makes it easy for him to steal two-wheelers.
