ITANAGAR, Dec 22:

The Arunachal Law Students Union (ALSU) on Friday has announced a 12-hour chakka bandh on January 27 next along the NH415 stretch near the civil secretariat gate, as first phase of its agitation to protest against the state government’s indifference towards its long pending charter of demands.

Addressing a press conference, President ALSU, Romik Jogu alleged that despite lapse of nine months no response has come from the government and they have been denied appointment in spite of requests.

Terming their demands as genuine and legitimate, Jogu disclosed that they have submitted various representations and memorandums to the CM and Governor but their demands have been intentionally neglected and sidelined.

“We are taking this drastic step because we have no option left to pressurize the government,” he said adding that the deadline has long expired.

During the bandh, no vehicles would be allowed to ply in to the civil secretariat from 6AM to 5PMexcept those in emergencies.

ALSU is demanding immediate repeal of the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 2004 terming it an unnecessary law which is curtailing the fundamental rights of citizens and contradictory to various provisions as enshrined in the Constitution of India.

It also criticized the government for converting the CM Bungalow into a guest house based on superstitions and asked for reconverting the property.

When the President of America can live in the White House, which is also rumoured to be haunted by ghosts of past Presidents, then why can’t our CM reside in the official bungalow? Jogu quizzed.

He alleged that the CM bungalow is becoming a burden to the state exchequer as government is spending lots of money for its upkeep including staffer’s salary, which he opined could be spent on developmental works.

The union is also seeking immediate implementation of Lokayukta court to curb increasing corruption in the state including setting up of an independent High Court, so that the needy do not have to travel to Guwahati High Court for minor cases incurring huge expenditures.

Framing a robust law and forest act, establishment of court of Judicial Magistrate first class in every district of the state, full-fledged juvenile rehabilitation centre in the state capital with sufficient professionals and staffers etc are among its key demands.

While empathizing with the plight of the general during such bandh calls, the organization however requested all to bear with the inconveniences calling it ‘for the welfare of all’.
