ITANAGAR, Mar 25: Alleging that students of the elementary level have not received textbooks for at least two academic sessions, the All Papum Pare District Students’ Union (APPDSU) has condemned the state government for ruining the future of the students.

Referring to RTI document, the student body claimed that the Director of Elementary Education has not supplied textbooks in the academic session 2014 to 2015 and 2016 to 2017 due to non availability of fund. It further added, in the year 2015 to 2016 the Education Department directly hired three private firms for the procurement of 7, 00,300 (Seven Lakhs Three Hundred) textbooks for elementary education but the district of Changlang, Namsai, Upper Siang, West Siang, Tawang, Tirap, Kra Daadi and Siang did not receive any textbooks and the district of Kurung Kumey, Papum Pare, East Kameng, Capital Complex, Upper Subansiri, East Siang, Longding, West Kameng, Lower Subansiri, Tezu, Roing, Anini and Anjaw received only 2,63,273 (Two Lakhs Sixty Three Thousand Two Hundred Three)  textbooks with a shortfall of 4,37,027 (Four Lakhs Thirty Seven Thousand Twenty Seven) textbooks.

While responding to the query regarding academic session 2017 to 2018,Department  replied  that  ‘supplying of textbooks in government schools is under process’,  whereas students of the session have already appeared their final examination which means that students went to school in last academic session without textbooks again, APPDSU asserted.

For the academic session 2018 to 2019, the department did not reply whether the state government has sanctioned any fund for the procurement of textbooks for elementary education, it stated in a release.

The union also questioned the department for procuring Sanskrit textbooks as third language which are rotting away in storerooms due to absence of  Sanksrit teachers.

While criticizing the state government on its lackadaisical attitude, APPDSU stated ‘the government could have judiciously utilized Rs. 30 Crore for the procurement of textbooks instead of hastily introducing Smart Class when students are going to school without textbooks and other facilities
