TEZU, Jan 4: Unspoiled and dirt-free surroundings that for ages have contributed to the splendour of the mighty Lohit and the Digaru river site are on the verge of getting downgraded due to litters dumped by picnic revellers since last few months.
It has now become an eyesore for the visitors who throng the Digaru river site and nearby forest plantations for holidaying. The NH-13 is also suffering from the menace as heaps of disposable plates and glasses, water and wine bottles can be found in abundance. The sight evokes disgust from any traveller on the highway and there is a growing demand for strict action against the violators. “Picnickers also dump large quantities of non-degradable waste in the pristine Digaru which is slowly polluting the fresh-water body and the administration needs to intervene immediately,” one of the locals reacted.
According to the locals, the spot has become a preferred picnic destination for revellers from the township, neighbouring districts and also from Assam. “They enjoy their picnics,
organize birthday parties and other merry-making events leaving behind tons of litters,” rued a local. There is a rising demand that a proper monitoring mechanism needs to be enforced along with involvement of local NGOs and nature activists to contain the menace.
The area falls under the jurisdiction of Digaru Forest Range in Lohit district.
