ITANAGAR, Dec 13: In two separate major fire accidents under the twin capital on Wednesday, three shops were completely gutted while four partially damaged at Akashdeep market this afternoon. 

In the second incident at Pappu Nallah, Naharlagun, fire reduced one SPT and three MBT type buildings to ashes, leaving at least five families homeless.  

No one was injured in both accidents, but private properties worth lakhs and goods along with jewellery yet to be calculated have been gutted in the inferno. 

As soon the news of fire broke, two fire tenders arrived at the spot to douse the fire at Akashdeep which took about an hour for the fire services to contain. A convoy of police and ITBP personnel jointly with the support of locals doused the fire after hours-long frantic efforts.

 A shopkeeper disclosed that the fire broke out from a grocery shop which was closed since last one and half month. He said that first they noticed smell of something burning inside the grocery shop, but could not ascertain what was really going on inside.

 “But later seeing heavy smoke coming out from the closed shutter of the shop, we immediately contacted fire services," the shopkeeper said. 

 Police source disclosed that the fire engulfed one bookstore, grocery and jewelry shop while partially damaging three jewelry shops and one stationary shop. However, many of the jewellery items could be taken out in the nick of time.

 “No casualty was reported as all the nearby shops were evacuated as soon as the fire broke out," the official  said adding that the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.  

Upon hearing the news, the DC, ICC Prince Dhawan rushed the DDMO and FO (DM) along with a team of SDRF to the incident site. The DC has requested the denizens of the Capital Complex to switch off all the electrical appliances before leaving the shops/ houses and before going to bed. He has also requested for fire extinguishers to be installed in all the shops.

Itanagar Market Welfare Association, (IMWA), president, Yumlang Achung who was assisting the rescue operation has appealed to the state government as well as the district administration to provide relief to the victims. 

Meanwhile, local MLA, Techi Kaso who visited the fire accident site at Pappu Nallah has announced one lakh rupees as immediate relief for the five affected families and assured to provide further help from his side.  

Though the exact cause of fire is yet to be ascertained, Police suspect short circuit to have triggered the incident at Pappunallah.
