ITANAGAR, Mar 1: As part of the initiative of Arunachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority to train the state’s community volunteers on Disaster Response, a state level training in collaboration with 12 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Itanagar commenced today at the latter’s headquarters in Doimukh.
The training which will continue till April 20 aims to cover around 1200 Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) volunteers from across the state to prepare them for playing the role of ‘first responders’ during disasters.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Secretary, Disaster Management Dani Salu in presence of Director, DM Atul Tayeng, Deputy Commandant, 12 NDRF Itanagar Brijesh Upadhyay, officials of 12 NDRF, State Disaster Management Authority and the participating volunteers. The comprehensive course module prepared by 12 NDRF will include topics like basic search and rescue, patient assessment, BLS & CPR, post-snake-bite measures, fire safety, group exercises etc. There will be both theoretical and practical sessions aimed at building the capacity and confidence of volunteers for acting as first responders and feedback will also be taken from them for further improvement of the course.
It has been observed that during any disaster, volunteers from the affected community play a vital role regarding immediate response and besides providing the initial rescue and relief services they act as a link with the disaster management institutions and work as ‘force multiplier’  particularly when it comes to delivering emergency services in remote pockets.
In the first batch 102 volunteers will be trained with five more batches to follow.
