HAYULIANG, Dec 11: In a tragic turn of events, 22 workers travelling from Tinsukia, Assam to Chaglagam in Arunachal Pradesh on December 7, have met with a major road tragedy, leaving at least 17 confirmed dead as search and rescue operations intensify in the remote Anjaw district.
According to reports, the group departed Tinsukia on  December 7, for a construction site in Chaglagam but failed to arrive even after three days, prompting their associate to file an enquiry at Hayuliang Police Station on December 10.
Acting swiftly, Hayuliang Police activated local sources to trace the missing group. Shortly after, officials received a crucial alert from a BRTF camp, where an injured survivor had staggered in, claiming that the truck carrying 21 others had skidded off the treacherous mountain road and plunged into a deep valley.
The survivor, who sustained serious injuries, was administered first aid at the BRTF camp before being evacuated to Assam via Tezu for advanced medical care.
The accident occurred on December 8,  two days before authorities were alerted. Preliminary information suggests that the truck veered off the road around 8–9 PM on December 8, approximately 11 km from Chaglagam, one of the most remote and difficult terrains in the Northeast. Tragically, authorities only received the information 48 hours later, significantly delaying rescue efforts.
Immediately after receiving the report on December 10, a massive multi-agency operation was launched. Personnel from the Indian Army, BRO, local police, district administration, and now a requisitioned NDRF team are engaged in the difficult task of retrieving bodies and searching for any possible survivors in the steep valley.
So far, 17 bodies have been spotted, while the search continues for the remaining missing workers. Available records indicate that 18 of the 22 workers belonged to Gilapukhuri Tea Estate, Tinsukia, Assam, deepening the tragedy for the community anxiously awaiting updates.
