RUKSIN/NIGLOK, Feb 25: Tension escalated at the ongoing anti-factory protest after 62-year-old Bharti Panyang, one of the fasting mothers from Ngorlung–Ralung village, was rushed to the emergency hospital in Ruksin on Tuesday following a sharp deterioration in her health.
Bharti Panyang had been on an indefinite hunger strike since February 23, demanding the permanent relocation or closure of the silicon factory at Niglok. After three days without food, her condition reportedly weakened, prompting fellow protesters and family members to seek immediate medical intervention.
Sources at the protest site said she complained of severe weakness and dizziness before being shifted to the hospital. Doctors are currently monitoring her condition.
The hospitalisation of the elderly protester has intensified emotions among the agitating mothers, who say the government must act before the situation turns more serious. The women have vowed to continue their indefinite hunger strike, asserting that their fight is for the safety of their children and the survival of their village.
“We are not fighting for politics. We are fighting for our children’s lives our land and our future ,” one of the protesters said, adding that Bharti Panyang’s health crisis should serve as a wake-up call for the authorities.
The protest against the silicon factory at Niglok has now taken a critical turn, with growing concern over the health of the fasting women and mounting pressure on the state government to intervene decisively.
Meanwhile, the Ruksin Area Youth Forum (RAYF) has submitted a request to the district administration seeking an immediate round table conference on the proposed Ferro Silicon Plant at Imphalgo.
According to official sources, the request letter was forwarded by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Ruksin, to the Deputy Commissioner of East Siang District for consideration. RAYF leaders have proposed that discussions on the issue be held first at the district level before involving higher authorities.
The ADC has requested the Deputy Commissioner to take a final decision on the proposal and communicate the same so that the information can be conveyed to the members of RAYF.
