ITANAGAR, Aug 6: A team from the Dirang-based National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) in a mountaineering expedition to Mt. Nun-Kun Massif had successfully scaled Mt. Kun (7077 mtr) on July 26-27 on the eve of the Kargil Vijay Diwas.
The seven thousand meter plus peak which is technically difficult and extremely challenging is located in Suru Valley in Zanskar Ranges of Ladakh and the team was led by an experienced mountaineer. Director NIMAS Col Sarfraz Singh has been successful in putting a record total of 16 climbers on the top of Mt Kun. The highly skilled team proved their mettle on the mountain by opening the entire route on their own without taking help of Sherpas and guides. The summiteers included nine army personnel and seven local youths of Arunachal Pradesh sponsored by the State Tourism department. The expedition was also in the line with 'Fit India Movement' and was aimed to inculcate the spirit of courage and adventure among the future mountaineers. The Chief Instructor of NIMAS who was instrumental in bringing the team and equipment all the way from Arunachal to Ladakh was the deputy leader of the expedition.

NIMAS has added numerous feathers in its cap and in the recent past conducted more than 10 mountaineering expeditions to the major peaks in India and Nepal.
