TAWANG, Sep 26: World Deaf Day was observed today by the District health society (NPPCD), NCD cell team led by Dr Sangey Thinley,SMO in collaboration with Tawang monpa employees  society (TMES) and Inclusive Education led by Tenzin Sherab (Coordinator) at Town  Secondary School, Tawang where more than 200 students participated from various schools.
Highlighting the importance of World Deaf Day celebration, Dr Thinley informed that this day is also observed as "International day for sign languages" to encourage the specially abled (deaf, mute and dumb) to learn sign languages so that they can communicate and understand languages easily.
“We must respect, encourage and promote every specially abled person. We must give them enough space in our society so that they can sail in their respective fields like many of them triumphed at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 ,” he said.

He reiterated that early detection, prompt hearing-aid fittings, and proper speech therapy is required for a good outcome in a hearing impaired child. He also informed that students from all educational institutions will be screened in phase wise manner and accordingly certificates for specially abled will be issued through the national UDID portal so that they can avail government aids and other rights. Dr Lham Dorjee Serdang (ENT specialist), Resource person, presented a PPT on deafness and all the students present were screened for deafness. Hrider Phuntsok, DDSE Tawang, appreciated the initiative and requested to carry forth similar activities in all the schools.
