ITANAGAR, Sep 6: Condolences are pouring in over the demise of Tai-Khamti Chief, Chow Khanchiang Namchoom who breathed his last at Dibrugarh on Monday morning. The state government has declared a one day public holiday in Namsai district on Tuesday as a mark of respect to the late chief. His last rites will be performed on September 7.
Born on 1st April 1945 at Chongkham village, Namchoom was the first Indigenous tribal from the state to hold the prestigious post of PCCF. Post retirement in 2005, he served as Chairman of the Chongkham Village Council and worked for the upliftment of society.
Governor Brig. (Dr.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.) in his condolence message said that Namchoom played a key role in the preservation and promotion of indigenous culture and language. In his passing away, the State and the Tai-Khamti society has lost a socially influential torch bearer, who immensely contributed to social reforms and development.
I join my Tai-Khamti brethren in praying to the Almighty to give eternal peace to the departed soul and strength and fortitude to the bereaved family and their near and dear ones to bear the irreparable loss, the Governor said.
Mourning his death, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein said that Namchoom will be remembered as an efficient and dedicated officer and for his immense contribution in the preservation and promotion of indigenous culture and language in society.
Mein later in the evening paid his last respects by laying a wreath on the casket where the mortal remains were kept for the public to pay homage at Chongkham Crematorium ground.
The Itanagar Theravada Buddhist Society (TBS) has also expressed profound sorrow on the passing of Namchoom. Chairman of TBS, Chau Dhanya Mungyak said that TBS has lost its founder member.
He is widely recognised for his visionary leadership and compassion. His contribution to the preservation of culture and language will be remembered forever.TBS draws immense inspiration from his lifelong and selfless dedication and efforts to promote culture and sustainable development.  We join the people of the Namsai district during this period of mourning and reflection, he said.
The Adi Baane Kébang while offering its condolences expressed solidarity with the family members in this hour of sorrow.
"He always had time to listen, and give advice & assistance whenever needed; he shall always be remembered for his immense contribution in the preservation and promotion of indigenous culture and language, " added President ABK Er Getom Borang.
