ITANAGAR, Oct 25: The All Tagin Students’ Union (ATSU) has launched an all-out campaign demanding justice for 19-year-old Gomchu Yekar, whose death by suicide has sent shockwaves across Arunachal Pradesh. The Union has accused senior IAS officer Talo Potom of sexual exploitation and mental harassment, as alleged in Yekar’s purported suicide note.
Speaking to the media, ATSU leaders, family members, and representatives from various community organizations united in demanding the immediate arrest of the absconding officer.
ATSU General Secretary Vijay Dobin alleged that Yekar was used for official tasks by Potom despite never being issued an appointment letter. “He was exploited under the false promise of employment and subjected to unbearable mental and sexual abuse,” Dobin said.
Dobin further issued a one-day ultimatum to the State Home Department, warning that if Potom is not arrested, ATSU members and supporters will retrieve Yekar’s body from the TRIHMS mortuary and bury it inside the residence of Talo Potom as a mark of protest.
Dobin further claimed that the deceased youth was HIV positive, allegedly contracting the virus through exploitation by both Engineer late Likwang Lowang—who also died by suicide—and the IAS officer. He urged other potential victims to come forward and undergo HIV testing, calling this case “just the tip of a larger pattern of abuse and corruption.”
ATSU has appealed to Home Minister Mama Natung for immediate intervention and expedited action against Potom, who remains untraceable and is currently the subject of a nationwide lookout notice issued by the police.
“This is not just about one victim—it’s about justice for all those who have been silenced by fear and power,” Dobin stated, urging citizens across Arunachal not to communalise the incident and demand accountability from those misusing public office for personal gratification.
