ITANAGAR, Aug 25: The National People’s Party (NPP) Arunachal Unit today welcomed the decision of the state government headed by Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union Minister for Law & Justice Kiren Rijiju to rehabilitate and to bring a permanent solution to the vexed Chakma-Hajong issue.
Speaking to reporters, state president NPP & MLA Roing Mutchu Mithi said ‘Though people of Arunachal sympathise with the Chakma-Hajong community on humanitarian ground but they will never accept them as indigenous people of this state. They cannot claim citizenship in Arunachal Pradesh. The door is closed here but windows to get citizenship in other states of India are open for them.'
He also cautioned that the state government should not amalgamate the Inter-state boundary issue and rehabilitation of the Chakma-Hajong issue.
Both are two different important issues and must be dealt in different ways. NPP has also urged the state government to be firm on these two pertinent subjects, he said.
Further expressing concern over the uncontrolled population increase of Chakma-Hajong in the state, the NPP President said ‘The population of Chakma -Hajong community is increasing day by day and unofficially it is about 1,00,000 to 1,50,000 lakh which is much higher than most of our indigenous tribes and it will create demographic as well as political changes in the state if they get citizenship in Arunachal.'
'We are aware of the recommendation of the Supreme Court related to the citizenship to Chakma-Hajong and on humanitarian grounds we also support them but not & never in Arunachal Pradesh,' asserted Mithi while adding that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is not applicable in Arunachal Pradesh.
