MP Ering writes to Prime Minister Modi over possible diversio

PASIGHAT, Nov 26:

The Siang river which is at its most pristine during the winter season this time around has been suspiciously muddy raising concern that China might be constructing infrastructure to divert its waters as reported earlier, which of course it has vehemently denied.

Recent reports suggested that China is constructing a 1,000km long tunnel—the world’s longest—to divert water from the Brahmaputra river in Tibet close to Arunachal Pradesh to the parched Xinjiang region.

Suspicions have been further bolstered as large scale fish deaths along the river banks has been reported from Upper Siang district towns of Tuting and Geling close to the Chinese border.

Very concerned over possible diversion of Siang River (Brahmaputra) by the Chinese government in Tibet, Lok Sabha MP Ninong Ering has appealed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise the issue in international forum and ascertain the exact work going on over Siang River (Tsangpo in Tibet).

Visiting the river Saturday morning, the MP observed that the muddy river water is an unusual phenomenon, especially during the winter.

“There can’t be any other reason for the mighty Siang to be muddy in the month of November. This must have occurred due to heavy land excavation on the Chinese side which has to be verified by an international team to ascertain the ground reality which if true is a violation of international treaty on rivers affecting both India and Bangladesh,” said Ering.

I have already raised questions in Parliament about it and also under rule 377 the matter needs to be discussed as it was not in session, added Ering.

Underscoring the huge humanitarian crisis and environmental consequences of such a move, Ering has also appealed the Ministry of External Affairs and Water Resources, Government of India to expedite measures to check such possible diversion of Siang River by China.

‘At a time when we are internally fighting for and against setting up of big hydro project dams here on Siang River, the Chinese have already built dams over it and now trying to divert it to desired locations which will literally affect the entire Siang/Brahmaputra basin human population and rich biodiversity,’ a worried Ering said.
