ITANAGAR, Feb 27:  Following the reported collapse of a newly constructed suspension bridge at Tirbin under West Siang District recently which seriously injured 7 including a pregnant woman, senior citizen of the area cum District Congress Committee (West Siang Unit), President, Marpin Basar on Monday sought immediate action against officers and contactors for substandard quality of works and demanded a detailed inquiry.

 

 

Briefing media persons at a press conference here at Press Club this afternoon, Basar alleged of obvious irregularities in quality control in the construction of the suspension bridge.

 

 

 ‘Bridge was carpeted by Bamboos suggesting foul play between the contractor and the department and is worthy of an investigation,’ alleged Basar adding that there is no provision of using Bamboo as foot rest while preparing Departmental Project Report (DPR) estimate.

 

 “If the reasons behind the bridge collapse is examined it is apparent that the accident is man-made and the concerned executing department should be held responsible for the tragic accident,” he said opining that collapse of a bridge in such a short span of time clearly suggests serious negligence of duty and corruption.

 

Alleging violation of DPR and poor substandard quality work, Basar said a free and fair probe, along with a scientific investigation, was a must to find out the exact cause of the tragedy.

 

While urging the government to take necessary steps for reconstruction of a new bridge to alleviate communication problems, he also

demanded the local MLA of the area to strictly monitor developmental projects and undertake timely inspections to check irregularities.

 

Disclosing that lack of vehicle at the Tirbin Police station resulted in delay during the incident, he requested the local MLA to arrange a vehicle to meet emergency situations.

 

Highlighting the pleas of local villagers of the area, he also appealed for early disbursement of compensation to the victims including maternity help for the pregnant women immediately.
