ITANAGAR, Jul 13: Secretary, Public Libraries Dani Salu on Friday exhorted the students’ community to develop the habit of reading and make good use of the public libraries and their facilities to expand their horizon of knowledge.

“Books are the best friends. Read as much as books, newspapers and magazines; your thinking will be deeper and knowledge will be wider. Moreover, you will get thousands of ideas which will be beneficial in later part of your life,” said Salu while addressing a gathering, mostly school students at an event to mark the National Reading Month at the State Central Library here.

Expressing his concern that the culture of reading books is on the brink of being extinct with the children’s growing inclination towards modern gadgets, he said teachers should inculcate reading habit other than the prescribed ones among the students so that their knowledge is not confined to textbooks or intended to be examination centric. He added that extensive reading of books, newspapers and magazines will enable the students acquire wider knowledge which will help them in their practical life.

Earlier, the Director of Public Libraries Jotom Borang while giving the welcome address exhorted the students to develop the love for reading books to be well conversant of the developments happening around the world.

Deputy Director of Public Libraries, Yanga Rigia Ete, in her keynote address, said that reading books helps one acquire better knowledge of language and writings.

Assistant Director of Public Libraries Lingam Ete also called upon the students to develop the habit of visiting public libraries to broaden their knowledge, by maintaining consistency.

The event a ‘story telling’ competition, was organized among the school children by the Department of Public Libraries, Govt of Arunachal Pradesh to mark the National Reading Month being observed from June 19 to July 18 next. Students from six Govt schools of Itanagar took part in the competition.

Dare Popy of Govt Middle School, Niti Vihar was adjudged first followed by Tara Chetry of Govt Middle School, ESS Sector and La Puski of Govt Hr Sec School, Ganga who emerged second and third respectively. All the winners were given cash prizes with certificates by the Director.

Three other participants namely, Joram Ban of Govt Hr Sec School, Arunodaya, Gedam Gamkak of Govt Sec School, P-sector and Doli Debnath of Govt Middle School, C-sector were given consolation prizes, according to a release here.
