PASIGHAT, Aug 24: Torrential rainfall for the last couple of days has resulted in the Siang River and its tributaries flowing in spate causing massive erosion along the left bank of the river under Lower Mebo villages like Borguli, Seram, Kongkul, Namsing, Gadum and Mer.
Rainfall recorded on Tuesday was 26.5mm and the Siang river was flowing at 153.03 metres, just below the  danger level which is 153.96m.
Local MLA Lombo Tayeng along with Mebo ADC A. Koyu and officers of concerned departments visited the affected areas on Monday and took stock of the situation. The unprecedented heavy rainfall caused massive erosion, damage to cropland, erosion of fertile agricultural land and flooding of low-lying areas and infrastructures. Rising water level of Siang River is posing a serious threat to entire rural areas of Mebo subdivision, the MLA said.
Altogether 10 villages with 15000 population have been badly affected, informed the MLA adding that power supply and water pipelines were also badly damaged. Tayeng directed the PWD to construct an alternative road at Sigar on war footing as the river was nearing the existing road. As per his instruction, heavy machinery has been deployed for immediate completion of the alternative road at Sigar. The MLA from his MLA-LAD fund has also been distributing roofing materials to the people who were shifting to safer places. He also directed the concerned officers for restoration of power supply infrastructure and water pipelines soon after the alternative road construction is completed.
Meanwhile, DDMO Ganden Tsomu informed that soil erosion was continuing at Jarkong area near Pasighat Airfield. DIPRO
