NAMSAI, Dec 2: In a major breakthrough against insurgent activities in the region, a joint team of Namsai Police, G-Coy 186 Bn CRPF, A-Coy of 11 Assam Rifles Namsai, and Tinsukia Police recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition from the Nongtaw Khamti jungle area early this morning.
The operation was conducted on the basis of inputs provided by ULFA(I) cadre SS Sgt. Ban Asom, who recently surrendered before Tinsukia Police. Acting on his lead, the combined forces unearthed One 7.62 mm MQ RA81 Rifle, 153 live rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, One IY shell from a concealed location in the forested area.
Security officials termed the recovery a major step in dismantling residual militant infrastructure in the inter-state corridor.
Ban Asom, also known as Bairab Hazarika, was among the 15 ULFA(I) cadres involved in the armed attack on the Army camp at Kakopathar, a high-profile incident that triggered extensive counter-insurgency operations. He had also escaped after an encounter with 11 Assam Rifles at 6th Mile, Namsai, making his surrender and cooperation a significant development in ongoing efforts to curb insurgent movement.
Police Authorities stated that further operations and interrogations are underway to trace additional hideouts, associates, and logistical support networks linked with the militant group.
