TEZU, Jan 6: Lohit police today arrested one Gopal Debnath who had been collecting donations using the false identity of a representative of ‘Sri Anath Sikshan Bhawan Ashram’, a fake charity organisation purportedly running an orphanage in Nagpur with a branch in Tinsukia.
Debnath had been collecting donations using the fake identity here in the township and neighbouring districts. The arrest was made from the private residence of the local MLA Karikho Kri where the accused approached for collecting donations. Police have seized all the money collected, a fake identity card and other documents used in the fraud. “I interrogated Debnath and after verifying the Nagpur and Tinsukia addresses found no existence of any orphanage. He is a resident of Makum in Tinsukia district of Assam and possessed a valid Inner Line Permit for Arunachal. After warning I compelled him to sign a bond of not repeating such acts of deception again in Arunachal and boarded him on a night shuttle bus for his hometown,” SI Tezu PS D Bazbaruah informed. Fake charities operate in a number of ways and it is better not to donate without verifying the authenticity of the donation seeker, he added.
When contacted, the local MLA said the person collecting donations on behalf of the charity did not have any proper identity document and the orphanage claim also proved baseless.
