RONO HILLS, Apr 28: Rajiv Gandhi University has decided to suspend all offline classes and close its hostels including the ones used by the research scholars starting from May 1 keeping in view of the sudden surge of Covid cases in the state and in conformity with the revised SOPs issued by the Central and state government.
This was informed by the RGU Registrar in a press statement issued on Wednesday. Prior to taking the decision a series of meetings were held by the varsity authority and it was agreed upon that for ensuring the health safety of students and thwarting the 2nd wave from spreading at the varsity campus, the steps were necessary. Few research scholars under the banner of Rajiv Gandhi University Research Scholars’ Forum (RGURSF), however, submitted a letter appealing that research scholars may be allowed to remain in the hostels. There are 12 Halls of Residence (hostels) in RGU, one of which is the Tissa Hall of Residence allocated fully for the research scholars. However, few research scholars including female students are staying in different Halls of Residence, the press release said. “Since all hostels in the state are being closed down in order to prevent the outbreak, we cannot afford to open them for the research scholars,” the Registrar clarified in the release.
RGU authority has reasoned that as all group activities/mass gatherings have been banned throughout the state and country, boarders cannot be allowed to stay at hostels as there is a high potentiality of community spread of Covid-19 that would put both the students and hostel staff at risk. “The statement that came in newspaper(s) and social media stating that the research scholars are being allowed to remain at the hostels of various institutions are

false and misleading and all educational institutions both government and private including hostels are being closed down w.e.f. May 1 in the state,” the release added.
The varsity authority has further clarified that it has not acted whimsically, hastily and unilaterally on its own and the decision has been taken in conformity with the directives of the government and as per the Disaster Management Act 2005.
