RONO HILLS, Mar 12: Rajiv Gandhi University with its pledge to generate better citizens for tomorrow organised a Symposium on Day 3 of Arunachal Panorama celebration on Sunday. With the theme, ‘Systematic corruption in Arunachal society reflects a deeper breakdown of community values’, the panel saw the delegates from various fields of expertise, among the members were CEO, Eastern Sentinel and General Secretary BJP State unit, Jarpum Gamlin, Associate Editor, Arunachal Times, Tongam Rina, Chairman, Arunachal Citizen Rights & Chairman of Sports Authority of Arunachal Pradesh, Bamang Tago, and Convenor, AAPSU women’s wing, Bengia Mepu.

“Today, corruption has become the law in the state which governs every process of society and there is no way to blame the high-ranking bureaucrats as the mechanism of the corrupt system is initiated at the ground level. This is a continuous process where the benefactor and the renderer are interdependent. The crisis can only be overcome by sincere will to discontinue the trend,” said Bamang Tago in his delilberations.

He further added, ‘there is a pattern of selling and buying power prevailing in our state, which keeps on repeating as we fail to question the system.’

‘Giving is encouraging’ Gamlin quoted while addressing the gathering. He pressed on the importance of value-based mindset in society. He said, “Corruption is yet another mystery as ‘chicken and egg’. Society gradually lost its right values of sharing collective principles and collective good as we progressed towards modernity.”

He recounted the values in NEFA era as far richer than what the later decades have produced. 'There is a lack of principles, ethics in our youths today which has resulted from the lack of conviction in imbibing those values from parents and overall education system,' he added.

‘In earlier times, hardworking and deserving individuals were worshipped and acknowledged by society but in present time, people here worship only those who have money and power,’ quoted Gamlin.

Rina, in her deliberation, spoke on the systematic mechanism of corrupt society and the systems, which comes under the purview. It echoes from every corner of society. Corruption is sowed with the simplest forms of favours, recommendations, and bribery. She cited examples of a village where GBs (village heads) played a pivotal role disseminating justice and worked for the community whereas nowadays, these helms of society are being used for political gain. In this manner, social groups have been formed by the individuals with deeper pockets with no intention or manners to lead, she said.

Mepu, representing the apex students’ body, urged the need for self introspection before pointing fingers at others. She further added that corruption takes place with the involvement of both participants where ‘One’s wants is another needs’.

The objective behind the event was to introduce the gradual shift of traditional values towards the corrupt societal principles and to expose the corrupt mechanism through which contemporary society works.
