ITANAGAR, Jan 21: North East Students' Organization (NESO), the conglomeration of all major student unions in the Northeast which includes the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) has taken a serious view of the recent news reports on construction of a settlement in Upper Subansiri district by China.
The often-repeated and illogical claims made by the Chinese government followed by misadventures along the LAC is totally uncalled for and NESO strongly condemns these nefarious acts which are breaching peace and tranquillity along the border, the union said in its statement. “Lately, it has been observed that the Central government as well as the MPs and leaders irrespective of all political parties are quick in their response to any misadventures on the Indo-Pak border. However, even when there are large-scale incursions along the LAC, there is an eerie silence by the government as well as the opposition MPs. Such dual standards over the years have been far more damaging and are bound to have serious ramifications,” NESO alleged.
The union’s coordinator Pritam Sonam while appealing for taking the sensitive border issue without any bias and apolitically, has also reminded the Arunachal West MP and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju that he had become the poster boy of his party when he strongly raised the issue of Chinese incursions both inside and outside the parliament. Unnecessary politics on the issue should be avoided by everyone including the honorable Minister and necessary steps for removal of the permanent structures built by the Chinese, if they are indeed within our territory should be undertaken, NESO demanded, observing that since 1962 there had been continuous breach of territories along the Arunachal Pradesh stretch of the LAC by the PLA. While drawing attention to the fact that no concrete steps have been taken so far by the successive governments, the union has demanded that the matter be now pursued by the Centre at all levels so that there is a complete end to such antics.
Despite more than 73 years of independence, a large part of Arunachal Pradesh is still bereft of proper development in the real sense of the term and there is an urgent need for ramping up important infrastructure projects, more particularly roads and communication in all border areas of the state, Sonam opined.
NESO Organizing Secretary Marge Riba strongly underscored the need for a permanent mechanism to counter the Chinese designs along the LAC. Repeated Chinese claims on Arunachal Pradesh are not tolerable and the sentiments of locals should not be undermined, he said. Questioning the silence of the Northeast MPs on the issue, he urged the region’s MPs to rise above political affiliations and collectively take up the matter.
