NAHARLAGUN, Aug 21: Peaceful protests continued at Simalguri area near Chessa bordering Assam following the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl whose body was recovered under mysterious condition along the  Rajghar roadside on August 19 morning.
On Tuesday, hundreds of students from lower primary, middle and secondary schools of Simalguri took out a protest rally covering a distance of about 4 kilometres demanding justice for the deceased.
In addition, various women groups of the area also organized a separate sit-in protest on the second consecutive day wherein people from all walks of life raised their voice against the brutal killing of the child and demanded immediate arrest of culprits involved in the incident.
When contacted, Naharlagun SDPO Make Bui, who is monitoring the situation along with his  counterpart ASP North Lakhimpur and OC Bihpuria from Assam, informed that as of now the situation in the area is under control and no untoward incident or violence has been reported.
A mass meeting was also convened by women groups and locals of the area wherein a unanimous decision not to resort to any violent activities in the wake of the death of the minor was taken.
However, the locals served an ultimatum of seven days to arrest the culprit and appealed to the police to intensify patrolling on both sides of boundary regularly for safety and security of children.
They also requested the state government to post more Police force at the Chessa-Police outpost which lacks adequate manpower to deal with such kind of situations.
