MAHADEVPUR, Dec 12: Normal life was paralyzed today at 48-Lekang constituency due to a 12-hour bandh called by the United Peoples Movement of Lekang demanding Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) for at least six tribes residing in the constituency.
Business establishments, banks, schools remained closed and vehicles were off the road. The bandh also affected district headquarters Namsai as agitators blocked the Dirak gate and stopped the entry of commercial or private vehicles.
‘The bandh was in consequence of the lackadaisical attitude of the state government as well as district administration Namsai who didn’t pay heed to our representation despite repeated submission of the same,’ informed member of UPMOL over phone.
He further added that, there are more than six tribes residing in the Lekang circle since ages but without any right of PRC. The movement will continue till authority gives a concrete assurance, he added.
Lekang is the Assembly constituency of incumbent Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, where most of the voters don’t have PRC.
