ITANAGAR, Feb 17: The People’s Party of Arunachal has reiterated its concern over the delay in rectification of the Statehood Act of 1987 and the need for allowing constitutional rights for the state akin to Articles 371-A and 371-G.
Terming the Statehood Act “defective’’ in its press release issued today, the PPA while conveying its resentment over its continuance has opined that the upcoming 35th Statehood Day should be observed as an occasion of mourning and mass introspection by all the people of the state instead of resorting to gaiety and splendour. “The PPA has always been reminding the people of the state how we have been living with the defective Statehood Act of 1987 enshrined in Article 371-H of the Constitution of India which is hollow and empty and doesn’t hold anything worthwhile for the indigenous people in terms of ownership rights over its land, rivers, forests and mineral within the territory of the state. This is an act passed by Parliament without any constitutional backing of the State Assembly which is why it had overlooked to accommodate the genuine concerns and popular grievances of the state’s indigenous people,” the release alleged.
The oldest and lone regional political party of the state recalled its long-standing efforts to draw attention to the issues of amendment of the Statehood Act and roll out of constitutional rights akin to Articles 371-A and 371-G enjoyed by the states of Nagaland and Mizoram respectively. Regretfully, all the state governments have failed to address these key issues so far, the release stated, while observing that since both the Centre and the state are being currently ruled by the same political party, time is opportune for initiating fresh dialogues with the Centre. The party has also sought more proactive roles by Union MoS Sports Kiren Rijiju, senior MPs Tapir Gao and Nabam Rebia and Chief Minister Pema Khandu in resolving the long-pending issues.
Drawing attention to the overarching importance of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 for Arunachal Pradesh and the need for its continuance particularly at the backdrop of the CAA, the PPA asserted that the British-made Regulation should now be given the status of a Parliament Act.
