Naharlagun, Oct 12: In a significant breakthrough, Naharlagun Police successfully cracked a disturbing cybercrime case involving the creation and circulation of a fake pornographic video. The video, which falsely portrayed a local girl currently studying in Guwahati, was being circulated on social media platforms. The victim's image had been taken from her Instagram profile and manipulated to depict her in a sexual act, causing her immense distress.
The video first surfaced on the messaging app Telegram under the name “Arunachal Girl's VIP,” where it was offered to individuals in exchange for payment. The girl, upon discovering the disturbing misuse of her image, began receiving derogatory messages from known and unknown individuals questioning her character. Overwhelmed by the mental agony and public shaming, she lodged a formal complaint at the Naharlagun Police Station.
A swift investigation was launched by a dedicated police team, including Inspector K. Dev (Officer in Charge, Naharlagun Police Station), Sub-Inspectors Niri Rama and Vivek Linggi, under the supervision of SDPO Naharlagun, Paul Jerang, and SP Naharlagun, Mihin Gambo.
Using a blend of technical expertise and traditional investigative methods, the police team was able to track down and apprehend the two perpetrators involved in the crime. The main accused, identified as 22-year-old Tai Tacha, was responsible for creating the fake pornographic video. He used a fake Telegram account under a local alias to distribute the manipulated video. Payments were facilitated via QR codes linked to the account of Hillang John, 24, a college student who assisted in the scam.
Both individuals were arrested on October 11, after police tracked their locations. They were produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) in Yupia and have been remanded to police custody for further investigation. The devices used to create and distribute the fake video have been seized as evidence.
This incident highlights the growing menace of cybercrime and the misuse of social media platforms for malicious purposes. The Naharlagun Police has urged the public to exercise caution while sharing personal information online and to report any suspicious activities immediately.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police are committed to ensuring justice for the victim while taking stringent actions against the accused, a statement issued read.
