TEZPUR, Dec 21:
Dakter Esse, faculty in the Department of Mass Communication, Rajiv Gandhi University and also deputy editor- North East ICN was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Studies under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences by Tezpur University at the XVth convocation of the university here today.
Her thesis titled ‘A study of Assam-Arunachal border narratives’ studies borders not mere as a cartographic reality but its implications on the life of communities in defining and re-defining their identity, everyday’s negotiation of sustenance and various forms of contestations cutting across the evolving political boundaries of the two states.
Rare in a doctoral evaluation report, the experts’ recommendations on Esse’s thesis read, ‘The thesis is of such outstanding merit that the university would be justified in publishing it on its own cost’, ‘it is fit for publication by the candidate in its original form or modified form’ and that the researcher has studied the problem with ‘complete clarity’.
External for the PhD open defence, director, Indira Gandhi National Human Museum, Prof. (Dr.) S K Chaudhuri, while putting on record that the thesis is one of the best he had read, considered it as a ‘very significant contribution to the existing understanding of borders and borderlanders’ adding that it has immense contemporary relevance in the context of North East India and even in the wider context of borderland research.
The external for oral defence and thesis examiner have both recommended that the thesis take the shape of a book and pave way for future scholars interested in the area of border studies.
Dr. Esse enrolled in the year 2012 worked under the supervision of Prof. Debarshi Prasad Nath.
It is pertinent to mention here that the thesis was found suitable for oral defence evaluation without further examinations or amendments in its first draft.
As suggested by the external, Dr. Esse is currently working on the volumes to explore further possibilities of research on dynamics of borderland which has emerged as one of the prime area of research across the political and cultural boundaries of the nation states.
