Rono Hills, Oct 7: The 11th edition of the North East Meet of Astronomers (NEMA-XI) organised by the department of Physics, Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), began on October 6. The three-day long event aims to bring together astronomers, researchers, and students from across the North Eastern region to exchange ideas, strengthen collaboration, and promote the growth of astronomy education and research.
The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Prof. P. K. Kalita, Head, Department of Physics, RGU, who highlighted the significance of NEMA in nurturing scientific curiosity and advancing research in the region.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Tenzin Norbu Thongdok, Member of the North East Council, Shillong, as the Guest of Honour. Addressing the gathering, he lauded the efforts of scientists and educators in advancing astronomy and allied sciences in the north east region. He also highlighted the vital role of the North East Council in supporting initiatives in space science and technology.
As the chief guest on the dais, Prof. S. K. Nayak, Vice Chancellor of RGU emphasised the importance of NEMA in fostering regional collaboration and strengthening academic networks. N. T. Rikam, Registrar of RGU, expressed pride in the university’s role as host of this significant scientific gathering.
Prof. Ranjeev Mishra, IUCAA Representative and Prof. Kanak Saha, IUCAA Coordinator elaborated on IUCAA’s initiatives to strengthen astronomical research and its continued support for universities and institutes in the north east region.
Prof. Sanjeev Kumar, Dean of Basic Sciences spoke on the Faith and Fact in Astronomy and Astrophysics, emphasising the balance between belief and scientific inquiry.
The first day of NEMA-XI ended on an inspiring note, paving the way for the scientific deliberations, presentations, and interactive sessions scheduled for the following days.
