The ongoing North East Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference (NERCPAC) has laid emphasis on creating a separate Union Ministry for proper implementation of the Act East Policy.

The conference also urged the Centre for revival of Special Category State status, Backward Region Grant Fund (BRGF) and the investor-friendly North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP) for all round development.

Expressing concern over poor telecommunication service in the North East, the conference asked the authorities concerned to take urgent steps in this regard. “The tele-density in the region is still low. So, we want a hassle-free service,” the conference pointed out.

The conference which was inaugurated on Thursday was attended by Speakers of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Deputy Speakers of Sikkim and Tripura.

Participating in the conference, Nagaland Speaker Imtiwapang Aier said that North East needs more attention from the Centre for development. Similarly, Assam Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami stressed on the need for better connectivity across the region to attract more business.

Arunachal Pradesh Speaker Tenzing Norbu Thongdok observed that the ongoing power projects should be completed in right time considering the demand for power in the North East. Manipur Chief Minister’s Economic Advisor suggested opening of more trade points with the neighbouring countries in order to boost border trade.
