ITANAGAR, Jun 11:  Maintaining its effort to encourage local weavers from all Northeastern states through fashion industries, the third edition of North East India Fashion Week themed as ‘Khadi Movement’ will be held from October 27 to 29 at state capital Itanagar. The registration and audition of designers and models have started.

Speaking to reporters at press club, renowned fashion designer and chief executive officer of NEIFW, Yana Ngoba said the event aims to give a platform to the indigenous weavers of Northeast India whose market has drastically gone down due to foreign materials imported from neighbouring countries.

‘After two successful editions many designers from the country are expressing willingness to participate in the event and also on the fabrics found in the Northeastern states,’ she added.

When asked about any support from state government to promote fashion industry, Yana said ‘to promote the weaving and designing industry in Arunachal, government must come up with appealing schemes and policies. May be the state government does have schemes in this regard but we do not know whom and which department to approach.’

The event will witness exclusive fashion shows by international designers from Philippines and New Zealand. Moreover clothes will also be exhibited and ready for purchase.

Menty Jamir, a designer from Nagaland asserted that handloom products from North East India are so vibrant that it can rule any market in the world. She also informed that being part of NEIFW makes her think positive about the fashion industry.

Hibu Ollo, a weaver who currently runs two weaving centers in Ziro valley, said that ‘NEIFW has proven to be a blessing in disguise for her as after participating in the event for two consecutive years she has got all the recognition that she ever wanted.’

Many other designers and weavers like Menty Jamir (Nagaland), Rohila (Karbi Anglong) along with Dolly Moyong, Nabam Chunkap, Biri Arang and Tasso Lily attended the press conference.
