KITPI, Oct 1: Environment & Forest Minister Mama Natung today reiterated the importance of making the state self-sufficient in line with prime minister Narendra Modi’s calls for an Atma Nirbhar country.
He made the comments during a visit to Jamkhar village in Tawang district’s Kitpi (also known as Kyidphel) circle.
The village and its surrounding areas are considered to be the rice bowl of the district.
Kitpi’s EAC, Tsering Chedon, informed Natung, who also holds the WRD portfolio, about the area’s potential and problems that farmers are facing.
Chedon informed him about the importance of the Kharsaneng area within the circle from an agriculture point of view and how the solar fencing provided by the department in few villages is expected to boost farming which had otherwise taken a backseat owing to wildlife disturbances.
She said that the villagers require solar fences to protect their crops from animals to act as a deterrent. She also informed that the fences that have already been put up do help keep smaller animals away but that they do little to keep monkeys away.
The villagers have requested for building higher solar fences so that the monkeys are not able to jump over the solar fences that deliver a mild electric shock.
She also apprised him about the need to have a channel/storm water drainage in an area at Jamkhar village.
In his interaction with village elders, panchayat representatives, and government officials, Natung said that he will raise the matter with the department and work to resolve the issues. He said that he wanted to see the projects being implemented by the department in the area and that he was happy to see the progress of work.
“It is important to see the projects instead of just reading about them on paper because on paper a lot is achieved but when we visit the sites of the projects, not much is done,” he said.
The minister also said that the government will support any work that needs to be done relating to the drainage system of the area and fencing of agricultural fields.
He also asked residents to cooperate with the local MLA, Tsering Tashi, saying that he is young and wants to work for the progress of the area.
During the interaction, the EAC said that it was during the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns when food supplies had been hard-hit that they realised the importance of becoming self-sufficient.
Natung also supported the view.
“Our chief minister Pema Khandu is also young and his motive is to develop the state and to make the state self-reliant.
It is important to become Atma Nirbhar and self-sufficient for the progress of the state,” he said.
